(Science: zoology) An edible fresh water new Zealand fish (Prototroctes oxyrhynchus) of the family Haplochitonidae. In general appearance and habits, it resembles the northern lake whitefishes and trout.

Synonym: grayling.

Origin: From the native Maori name.
