A three-carbon monosaccharide


A triose is made up of a chain of three carbon atoms. Two naturally occurring trioses are aldotriose (glyceraldehyde) and ketotriose (dihydroxyacetone). These trioses are important metabolites in cellular respiration.

Word origin: tri- (three) + -ose (relating to sugars)
