Thermogenin gene is mapped onchromosome 4q31 span at about 33kDa which belongs to the family of mitochondrial anion carrier proteins that is mainly expressed in the mitochondria of brown fat tissue where it provides mechanisms for the massive heat generating capacity of the tissue. It is related to other mitochondrial metabolite transporters like adenine nucleotide translocator, a proton channel in the mitochondrial membrane.
Thermogenin is similar to the ATP translocator of skeletal muscle in which identified as coenzyme Q. It facilitates the transport of anions from the inner to the outer mitochondrial membrane and protons from the outer to the inner mitochondrial membrane as well as lessens the mitochondrial potential in the cells.
Thermogenin is a transmembrane that decreases the proton gradient produced by oxidative phosphorylation in order to create permeability of the inner mitochondrial membrane permittingprotons into intermembrane space to go back to the mitochondrial matrix.
