sorbitol

(Science: chemical) The polyol (polyhydric alcohol) corresponding to glucose. Occurs naturally in some plants, is used as a growth substrate in some tests for bacteria and is sometimes used to maintain the tonicity of low ionic strength media.

Sorbitol is also used as a laxative and can be given either orally or rectally.
