rhamnus

(Science: botany) A genus of shrubs and small trees; buckthorn. The California Rhamnus Purchianus and the European R. Catharticus are used in medicine. The latter is used for hedges.

Origin: NL, from Gr. A kind of prickly shrub; cf. L. Rhamnos.
