noun, plural: plane joints

A synovial joint in which only a slight, sliding or gliding motion is allowed in the plane of articular surfaces.

The opposing surfaces are (almost) flat, with movements limited by their tight joint capsules. Examples are the intermetacarpal joints and the acromioclavicular joint (between the acromion of the scapula and the clavicle).
