A surgical procedure forming an opening into the pericardium and draining of fluid or other waste product that accumulated inside the pericardial sac.


This surgical procedure is carried out such as in patients with cardiac tamponade. It is made in order to drain the fluid that accumulates inside the pericardial sac around the heart.

Synonym: pericardial window.
