Definition

noun

(genetics) A theory formulated by Gregor Mendel based on his garden pea breeding experiments wherein he conjectures that discrete particles (now referred to as genes) that determine phenotypes are passed on from parents to offspring across generations.

Supplement

Mendel's theory was proposed in contrast to the previously more widely accepted hypothesis, blending inheritance hypothesis, to explain biological variations and inheritance of physical traits.
