Definition

noun

A protein involved in the formation and maturation of oligodendrocytes within the brain to uphold neural cell specification of different cell types in the nervous system.

Supplement

Oligodendrocyte transcription factor 1 gene is mapped on chromosome 21q22.11 that encodes basic helix-loop-helix transcription factors distributed rostrally from the basal forebrain to the hindbrain and is coexpressed with the vimentin.

Oligodendrocyte transcription factor 1 is expressed specifically in the brain particularly in oligodendrocytes which is strongly expressed in oligodendrogliomas while weakly expressed in astrocytomas. It is present throughout the spinal cord and the ventricular-subventricular zone of ganglionic eminences as well as in telencephalic proliferative zones and white matter.

Oligodendrocyte transcription factor 1 is implicated in primary tumors of the brain which is believed to be of glial cell origin and serves as an important marker to enhance identification of oligodendroglial tumors. It has an essential role in the consequent remyelination of white matter injury by repairing the lesions that occurs in individual with multiple sclerosis.
