A gram-negative commensal bacterium that normally colonizes the mucosal surface of humans and animals involved in some infections and diseases.
Neisseria polysaccharea has the ability to generate acid from glucose and maltose as well as polysaccharides from sucrose. Its growth may be inhibited by the presence of sucrose and mostly isolated from the nasopharynx of children.
Neisseria polysaccharea is a new species which can be differentiated from the other species of the genus Neisseria on its nutritional requirements in chemically defined medium as well as its production of extracellular polysaccharide which distinguished phenotypically from other related species with the same deoxyribonucleic acid relatedness. It is similar to Neisseria lactamica and Neisseria gonorrheae but differentiated from its beta-galactosidase activity and carbohydrate reactions.
Neisseria polysaccharea is susceptible in ampicillin, penicillin, cephalothin and cefuroxime. It has the same habitat, antigenic structure and genetic distance with meningococci and has the possibility of penicillin resistance transmission via genetic renovation from commensal Neisseria.
