A gram negative nonmotile and diplobacilli short rod bacterium associated as a normal flora of the nasal cavity of healthy goats.
Moraxella caprae in culture media characterized with smooth, convex and grayish white colonies with a size of about 1-1.5 micrometer surrounded entirely by hemolysis which grows best at temperature ranging from 30-37’C. It is catalase positive, oxidase positive and undergoes nitrates reduction.
Moraxella caprae shows relationships with other classical moraxellae through total genomic DNA-DNA hybridization, base composition and genetic transformation and it signify based on general phenotypic and morphologic characteristics of this bacterium an affinity to classical moraxellae.
Moraxella caprae exhibited an extremely high level of genetic similarity to Moraxella bovis based on qualitative and quantitative genetic transformation data.
