Lar

a tutelary deity; a deceased ancestor regarded as a protector of the family. The domestic Lares were the tutelar deities of a house; household gods. Hence, eng., hearth or dwelling house. (Science: zoology) a species of gibbon (hylobates lar), found in Burmah.
