Kruppel-like factor 5
Kruppel-like factor 5 gene is mapped on chromosome 13q22.1 that contains 6 exons which spans at about 18.7kb consisting of 457 amino acids. It enables to undergo various post translational modifications like acetylation, ubiquitination and phosphorylation. It has 3 zinc-finger domains at C-terminus that binds to GC DNA sequence presents widely in prostate, intestine, lung, breast, placenta, pancreas, skin, skeletal muscle and uterus.
Kruppel-like factor 5 plays a significant role in the intestinal epithelial homeostasis and maintains epithelial proliferation, differentiation and cell positioning along the crypt radial axis. It regulates cell proliferation, apoptosis, cell cycle differentiation and stemness in a context-dependent manner. Its expression is regulated by estrogen and P4 in breast cancer cells even though estrogen facilitates KLF5 degradation.
Kruppel-like factor 5 deficient in uterine caused female infertility since COX2 is normally expressed in luminal epithelium and stroma at the blastocyst attachment yet it could not expressed if KLF5 is missing thereby it is very important for normal implantation.
