Kallikrein 5

From Biology-Online Dictionary | Biology-Online Dictionary

A member of serine protease family that has been shown to be differentially expressed at the mRNA to regulate cell shedding that form the extracellular component of cell junctions in the stratum corneum.

Kallikrein 5 is previously known as stratum corneum tryptic enzyme that is expressed in the epidermis, mapped to chromosome 19q13.41 contains 5 coding exons wherein the protein sequence is a conserved catalytic triad expected to be secreted serine protease and proteolytic action.

Kallikrein 5 is upregulated in breast cancer line in the occurrence of estrogens and progestins coupled with more hostile forms of epithelial ovarian carcinoma. It is found in various tissues with uppermost expression levels seen in the skin, breast, salivary gland, esophagus and relatively high in milk of lactating women and fluids from metastatic ovarian cancer patients and ovariantissue extracts while it is undetectable in serum of normal individuals thus, serves as a biomarker in patients with ovarian and breast cancer.

Kallikrein 5 is expressed in diversetissues including salivary gland, thymus, lungs, prostate, brain, thyroid, colon, uterus and trachea that shows distinct vital physiological function associated in carcinogenesis and a novel biomarkers of other diseases.
