noun, plural: ischial bones

(1) (anatomy) The part that forms the lower and back portion of the hip bone.

(2) (entomology) One of the pleurae of an insect.


In anatomy, the ischium is found on either side of the hip bone, just below the ilium and behind the pubis. It is made up of three portions:

  • body of ischium
  • superior ramus of the ischium
  • inferior ramus of the ischium

Word origin: ischion means hip
