The portion of the gut in certain vertebrate animals (such as fish) that include the oral or buccal cavity and the gill cavities.


In certain animals such as fish, the alimentary canal is divided into head gut, foregut, midgut, and hindgut. In other animals, the head gut portions of alimentary canal is part of the foregut.
