A type of fibrous joint in which a conical process is inserted into a socket-like portion.


Example is the fibrous connection between the root of a tooth and the bony socket, such as maxilla or mandible.

Word origin: from Greek gomphōsis, from gomphoun, to fasten with bolts, from gomphos, bolt.
Synonym: peg-and-socket joint.
