(physiology) To go through a state of low or lack of activity during hot, dry season.


Supplement

Some animals that estivate during the hot season are the lungfish (Protopterus), some toads and snails. The lungfish and toads for instance move underground during the hot dry season.


Word origin: Latin aestivare, from aestus, (heat).
