Enzyme inhibitor is a substance that binds to an enzyme in order to suppress the latter's activity. Many enzyme inhibitors are used pharmacologically. Some of them are capable of killing or rendering a pathogen inactive. Others are used for correcting metabolic disorders. Angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitor is an example of an enzyme inhibitor. It is used for treatment of hypertension and heart failure. It exerts haemodynamic effect chiefly by inhibiting the renin-angiotensin system. It reduces peripheral arterial resistance. It also modulates sympathetic nervous system activity. It increases prostaglandin synthesis. It causes vasodilation and mild natriuresis without affecting heart rate and contractility.
In contrast to enzyme inhibitors, there are substances that bind to enzyme to active the latter or enhance its enzymatic activity. These substances are called enzyme activators.
