A transmembrane protein involved in the differentiation of various cell types that is believed to be atumor suppressor.

Delta-like 1 gene is mapped on chromosome 6q27 belongs to the delta/serrate/jagged family consisting of 528 amino acids that contain DSL domain and eight tandem EGF repeats with 23 aa long and 155 aa cytoplasmic domain. It is highly expressed inheart and pancreas and lower amount in brain andmuscle. During fetal life is transiently expressed in gastrulation and early organogenesis and its expression remains through adult life.

Delta-like 1 it plays in mediating cell fate pronouncement during hematopoiesis as well as in cell to cell communication. It blocks the differentiation of progenitor cells into the B-cell lineage while promoting the emergence of the population of Natural killer cell precursor.

Delta-like 1 mutation caused phenotypes similar to maternal andpaternal uniparental disomy of chromosome 14 implicated in child and adolescent obesity. It induces apoptosis and inhibits proliferation in multiple glioma cell lines thereby represents a new and potentially promising targets in glioma therapy and reveals the significance of cancer cell survival and proliferation.
