The number of chromosomes in a cell. In humans, the normal haploid chromosome Number is 23, (or the diploid chromosome Number is 46). The highest diploid number of chromosomes so far is 1600 in Aulacantha (protozoa). Genetic mutations can result in varying chromosome numbers to the genome norm, which usually have disadvantageous results.
