A genetic disorder characterized by the cat-like cry symptom in affected infants

Jerome Lejeune and his team was the first to report the cat-like crying (likened to the meowing of a Parisian cat) of infants affected with this syndrome, hence the name. Other symptoms include significant delay in mental development, low birth weight, and physical malformations (e.g. microcephaly, hypertelorism, micrognathia, wide eyes, and skin tags near the eye). Cat cry syndrome is a genetic disorder caused by a deletion of a part of a chromosome (5p).
