noun, plural: apicomplexans
Any of the numerous protozoans of the group Apicomplexa, characterized by having a special organelle called apical complex, single-celled, parasitic, spore-forming and reproducing sexually and asexually in alternate generations.
Apicomplexans are sometimes taken as synonymous with sporozoans. At other times sporozoans are regarded as only a subset of the apicomplexans.
