Ambient cistern

Definition

noun

A cistern of the subarachnoid space between the posterior end of the corpus callosum and the superior surface of the cerebellum. It is also described extending to the layers of the tela chorioidea of the third ventricle, as well as enclosing the internal cerebral veins which caudally join forming the vena magna cerebri (Galen's vein).

The ambient cistern is sometimes defined as including the quadrigerminal cistern, and connecting to the interpeduncular cistern.
