There could be many reasons for this. My best guess is that the pheromones that are released by the female attract the male and activate various receptors within the brain.

In male, there is a thing called "erotic stimulus", which will start to trigger sexual reaction and raising sexual desire. This is a long story but one of them is that erotic stimulus will trigger the opening of sphincter of penile arteria, then the blood will flow filling cavernous tissue. That's how men got errection. Another thing is the effect of androgen is to raise libido. The pulsatory production and the peak of androgen will create the "horny" feeling.

I don't want to hijack this thread, but speaking of pheromones, I've been seeing more and more ads for pheromone colognes, and while it seems awfully unlikely that they would work at all, I was curious about what more knowledgable biologists might have to say about them.

In humans, sexual attraction is a combination of many things such as appearance, fitness, personality, wealth, social status, etc.

Humans do have some sensitivity to pheremones, but not really enough to make much of a difference, when stacked alongside the other aspects of attraction.

In nature, pheremones are responsible for a lot more than just attraction, and I personally think that the over-use of pheremones in perfumes may have an adverse effect on people, via their subconscious instinct.

Doesnt seratonin play a factor in sex-drive/attraction?

You will find no answer to your question, no matter how much (mis)information is provided. Welcome to being human.
