this is just starting point for you to research (because i'm not sure if it's the correct answer)

Think about this ... What is the name of the protien that "extracts" oxygen from the air in the human lung? (found on RBC) ... Maybe fish and Humans use different' versions of the same protein?

... something to think about..

good luck!

No, that would require energy.

why other splitting done by proteins don't require energy?

The factor of aquatic organism's blood can work at low concentration of Oxygen..... we have Hb in our blood this requires higher conc. of Oxygen...

by the way.. I don't believe that fish's gills 'extract' oxygen from water by breaking H2O into hydrogen and oxygen.

Protein found in gills are functional protein used in respiration activity, an enzyme, but I am not sure which enzyme lol. Could be cytochrome, it is important enzyme to provide energy via oxidation reduction (oxidative phosphorylation, electron transport) :)
