5' to 3' or 3' to 5' or wtf?

Post by genomeman » Sun Jan 14, 2007 12:31 am

:? can someone offer a simplified explanation of how dna is read from 5' to 3'? I understand that subunits can only be added to the OH (3') end, and that the strands are always opposite to each other, (and i get totally confused when question asks about trna and mrna)

if subunits are always added to the 3' end, then wouldn't that mean that its being read 3' to 5'???
thanks for any help!

yes its read 3' to 5' but u can say the replication is done 5' to 3' if u refer (spelling) to the new strand (its growing 5' to 3')
check this up http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dna
hope it helps and im hoping im not wrong about it :)

Template is read by enzyme in 3'-5' direction but new strand starts from opposite of 3' end of template i.e 5' end of new strand and new bases are added to 3' and of new strand.......

That might also help you.......
