making proteins

Post by chenwithasterisk » Tue Jan 02, 2007 3:37 am

1.the mRNA sequence is shown.

GUAA CCT GAG CAUUC
if the first base G is deleted, why would it be incorrect to say such an organism is a mutant?
i said:
because UAA is one of the three stop condons.this means no amino acids will be produced.mutation is caused by a change in the base sequence, causing a reading frame shift, producing different amino acids.however in this case, no amino acids will be produced.thus its not concerned with wether or not it is a mutant.

however, this answer says, because the deletion of a base from RNA,offspring can not inherit any changes.only changes in DNA can be inherited.

i totally disagree.any suggestions?

Refer to the definition of mutant.

mutant is an individual resulting from mutation, which is a sudden structural change in the DNA of a gene.

BUT refer to mutation, changes to base sequence of genetic material(either DNA or RNA).

so shouldn RNA be invovled?

however, i conviced my self by following explanation: the sequence of bases of DNA determine the sequence of base of RNA.therefore,if an organism has a normal set of DNA,but a change occurs in RNA.it can not be called a mutant.

u know wat i mean? i even cant explain well hehe

Is this your RNA...........???

Then where from where T---- "GUAA CCT GAG CAUUC "came from??

Ok understanding mistake.........

The matter of mutation due to deletion of NB from mRNA can not cause mutation....... :o

Ya, but if it is genomic RNA of RNA Virus.... Then it may be... :)
