Autotrophs (think plants and the like) make their own food by means of photosynthesis (converting sunlight into sugars that they can use for energy). Heterotrophs (think of anything in the animal kingdom) cannot make their own food this way, so they eat autotrophs. Some heterotrophs eat other heterotrophs.
