When would the urine of a normal individual contains glucose?

Urine does not normally contain glucose. If the blood glucose level goes above a certain level, then some glucose 'spills' through the kidneys into the urine. A simple 'dipstick' test can detect glucose in a sample of urine. If you have glucose in your urine, you are likely to have diabetes.

However, some people have kidneys that are more 'leaky', and glucose may leak into urine with a normal blood level. Therefore, if your urine contains any glucose you should have a blood test to measure the blood level of glucose to confirm, or rule out, diabetes.

Sorry if this is slightly off-topic, but one day at school, one of our toilets had urine sprayed all over it and ants were crawling all over the urine. In my opinion, there must've been some sort of glucose in that stuff.

That sounds like a logical thing. Unless they were attracted to something else the urine contained. What else does it contain that it would attract ants? anybody know? Good thinking, condraz23!!

hmm.. well since ants use chemical sense as their primary sense, i would say it is possible that something in the urine atracted them, the same way it atracts sharks. but i have no idea of the exact chemical..

Actually, I'm doing this unit right now, yesterday in fact.

Urine would contain glucose if the individuals blood sugar level is already at it's threshold. This would make the membranes in the proximinal tubule basically "shut out" glucose reabsorbtion. If your blood contains all the sugar that you eat, then you'd basically die of sugar poisoning. =P

Basically, you eat a few pounds of sugar a day, you're going to be pissing out sugar.

Ha! What a coincidence. While reading, I also found this; (note, this is a paraphrase of the text)

In 1889, two scientists called Mering and Minkowski of France removed teh pancreas of a dog. The dogs became fatigued. Ants started gathering around the dogs. What had caused the ants to gather? The scientists analyzed the urine of the sick dogs and found that it contained glucose, a sugar, while the urine of the healthy dogs did not. The ants were attracted to sugar.

So, either the absence of insulin or profusely high blood sugar level will cause the excretion of glucose in the urine. [/quote]
