After growing some canadian pond weed in my pond for several weeks, i removed the plant for use in an experiment. However, i noticed the elodea had strange growths on the sides that were not present before. what am i seeing?

It is a root :) When you grow them with a substrate like mud, they will grow more vigorously, have structures like hooks to anchor to the mud ;)
