In distilled water they'll burst.

Probably due to exessive osmosis which leads to cytolysis.

not probably ;) iso-osmotic fluid is 0,9% NaCl-solution.

If they are placed in distilled water they are in a hypotonic solution therefore they will burst, if they are places in a salt concentration higher than about 1% they will shrivel due to plasmolysis and osmosis(hypertonic solution). The water in the cell will go from high concetration to low concentration. However if they are in just plain water it will probably be a hypotonic solution and the cells will burst.

plasmolysis can't occur in RBC because they don't have a cell wall like plant cells. They just shrink because os fluid moving through the membrane.

We call this shrink thing as "crenation" 8)
