"Gene" refers to the region of DNA coding for a specific characteristic - a locus on a chromosome. "Allele" refers to a specific VERSION of that gene. For example, for simplicity's sake, I will say there is one gene for hair color. However, people can have brown, blond, red, etc hair colors. The gene is for "hair color" in general. The allele determines what color the hair is.
