appendix - rudimentary organ

Okay this question I ask almost ashamed of my ignorance; acknowledging that the appendix is a rudimentary organ, but a rudimentary organ of what??? thanx

There is probably an article about this if you search @the above article icon.

It has no known function today in humans.

The appendix protudes from the first part of the colon.
In rabbits it is an organ which aids in digestion.

For some reason it can become infected and rupture if ot caught early.

My theory is that at one time humans were herbavores and thus utilized this organ in some way. :?: IMO

The appendix vermiformis is part of the GALT (Gut Associated Lymphoid Tissue) and plays an important role in preventing local infections from spreading.
