Can anyone help me out as how to find the doubling time of a particular cell line?

Thanks.

Thanks.

What species are you working with? Is it some bacteria? Because some bacterial species have been studied and the average generation time published.

2. split. and put a certain amount in each flask.(call it B)

3. After a few days, count the cells again.(call it C)(Record also the number of days. call it D)

B x 2to the power N = C

Solve for N. N is the number of doubles.

So it takes D days to have N number of doubles)

If it takes you 3 days to have 5 doubles, 1 double will take you 3/5 days. Which is 0.6day

0.6 day will be the doubling time.

**exponential growing phase**.

It could be hard to get a reliable calculus with adherent cells compare to

**suspension cells**.

Split your cells, measure their concentration : c1

Let them grow during h hours

Count them again : c2

**The doubling time(in hours)=h*ln(2)/ln(c2/c1)**

You can use decimal or neperien logarithm.

You can use this formula to forcast the cell expension or to calculate the volume to split to get a target concentration after a period of growing.

A software do this for you at http://www.doubling-time.com

For a given cell lines, the doubling time changes regarding the number of passages, the serum lot, the way you pass them...

### Re: Doubling time for cells

You can use the online calculator to calculate the doubling time of your cells.

http://www.doubling-time.com/compute.php?lang=en

here is the chinese version !

http://www.doubling-time.com/compute.php?lang=zh

Very convenient if you have several time points.
