For a final project in AP Environmental Science, my friend and I started growing a hydroponic garden (it will actually be an aquaponic garden, but we need the plants to filter out nitrates since the last fish in it died from that...). We are having a problem with support, right now we have the stems wrapped in paper towel (4-5 layers) but the lettuce seems to be growing stringy and falls over. Is there any way to help support the plants without adding any rocks or anything, as the school has to pay for it (since a club is selling the plants as a fundraiser) and they won't buy us rocks/minerals? Thanks.
