in each cell of your body you have 2 copies of each autosomal chromosomes.

FOr example, you got 1 chrom. #3 from your mom and the other from your dad. So, your 2 chrom. #3's aren't identical.. but they're homologous.

Get it? (i'm not sure if i'm being clear enough)

Well, i don't want to give you answers for you essay (unless you're willing to give me help with my molecular genetics paper ...!)

Just kidding!!!

Yeah, check out http://www.wikipedia.com and type in homologous chromosomes. They'll give you a small definition (a better one than mine) and you can use that as a starting point for your essay.

If you have more questions, or don't understand something (during your research) come back.. and ask detailed questions about an aspect of a topic... and someone on here will be willing to help clarify things for you.

Good luck! and please come back with any additional questions that you have!
