RNA Primer for DNA?

Why is it that evolution has allowed for a lagging strand in DNA replication to utilize an RNA primer?

DNA polymerase cannot start a chain (needs OH group to add a nucleotide) so enzyme primase forms short sequence of RNA. Unfortunately have no idea about the origin. :( .will try to dig something..
