I've read Why We Get Sick: The New Science of Darwinian Medicine by Randolph Nesse and George Williams, Vintage Books, 1996. Published in the United Kingdom as Evolution and Healing: The New Science of Darwinian Medicine, Orion Press, 1996. I read it back when it came out, and I found it very interesting back then. It's an interesting way of looking at the problems of disease.

the gutenberg project has couple of older books and wikibooks has some good ones too
