Are missing toes evolutionary?

Post by i_r_e_d » Sun Apr 02, 2006 6:05 am

My friend Sheila has no pinky toe and has her "index" and "middle" toes connected to the nail... This doesn't effect her because she's a dancer. Anyway, she says that this is an evolutionary breakthrough... I say shes full of... stuff... Are missing toes and webbed toes evolutionary?

The only way that you can guage whether or not evolution has occurred is if there is a shift in allele frequencies in a population. Since your friend is just one individual, there's no way to say whether or not it's an evolutionary trait, for now it's just a chance occurence. But if in 50 years we see an explosion in individuals with that particular trait, then we'll know that she was right!

Probably it was chromosomal anomaly.
The hand of God may well be all around us, but it is not, nor can it be, the task of science to dust for fingerprints.

Yes, I agree with Damien. It's probably not a trait that will be passed to her offspring.
If it is, it will probably not increase her or her offsprings chances of survival and successful reproduction.
In fact, it might be a deterrent to some males, as they might want to get anywhere near that [email protected]$$ foot!
Then again, she might be able to win the males back with a seductive dance...

If you like, I can pretend to be a YEC and try to get a debate going.
Generally speaking, the more people talk about "being saved," the further away they actually are from true salvation.
