Cloning and Stem cell

Post by ngfok » Thu Mar 16, 2006 10:32 pm

"american scientists a company have stuneed the world's medical community by cloning a human embryo for the first time. it had created the clones in order to produce a store of lifesaving embryonic stem cells, not cloned humans" I don't get what do they mean by "to produce a store of lifesaving embryonic stem cells, not cloned humans".

I think they meant that they cloned human embryo just to take (or could be enrich) their embryonic stem cells. So, those embryos can't do further differentiation to become fetuses but they're cultured as embryonic stem cells....

Or they have no intention of making the embryo become a fully grown human.

When stem cells are taken from an embryo it kills the embryo. I asume they intend to take the stem cells from the embryo, wich will in turn destroy the embryo. Because of moral issues, they may have designed the cloned embryo so that it could never actually become a human even if left alone.

@Remote
they take the inner cell mass from the embryo, leaving the throphoblast (so, embryo is killed).

@deegc
ethically it's cannot be done..

there are experiments in which stem cells are removed from a mouse blastocyst that turned into normal organisms --> there is a possibilty of regulation :)
