How about filiviri(Ebola and Marburg)? They were discovered quite recently(1970s i think) compared to other deseases, and you can say that they are important. Being deadly and uncurable and all...
But maybe victor will give you a better suggestion. I probably know less than you do about virology...

Just go to http://www.plos.org/ select PLoS Biology and make a research with virus, and pick your recent paper. It's a free and excellent scientific journal, you can find really recent papers. Now it's all about understanding the papers and I can't help you.

You can also go to the journal of virology paers are free after 6 month. Excellent journal too...
