Cell respiration and energy

Post by android » Mon Feb 20, 2006 10:35 pm

Can anybody help a poor, misguided chemistry teacher? I always tell my students that bond breaking is an endothermicprocess, but one of them recently rebutted me, "Sorry Sir, but what about ATP to ADP? Breaking bonds and releasing energy. You're wrong."

Can anybody help me? Think it may have something to do with free energy. Many thanks.[/i]

Delta G=Delta H- T*delta S where delta means change. When your talking about the energy released by ATP your talking about delta G. The differnec in BOND energies is compensated for by a change in entropy or free energy of the system.
