Have you tried tasting something bitter with the tip of your tongue? My bio book says even though the buds are concentrated in areas, each area does have a variety(not just one type) of buds.

What you mean by "specific area" is where the receptor for a certain taste is abundant, which makes a strong sensation rather than another areas. Actually, the receptor is everywhere...

The pallatine area is more sensitive to sour and bitter tastes and less senzitive to sweet and salty. the pharynx and epiglottis are equally senzitive to all tastes
As for why are the taste buds lcoated in specialised areas... I really have no idea why they evolved that way. sorry... i'll ask my girlfriend
