Gregor MendEl (1823-1884)- father of genetics
worked in a monastry with pea plants. (Pisum sativum)
He looked at different characteristics in the plants and bread pure breeding plants to see what happened.
Mendel noticed that there were dominant and recessive characteristics
ie. Seed colour
Yellow= dominant = Y
Green= recessive = y
He bread YY with yy and saw all offspring were Yellow seeds. Then he bread these offspring with each other and saw that 75% were Yellow and 25% were Green
concluded that there were 25% YY, 50% Yy and 25% yy

He also did di hybrid crosses where he looked at 2 characteristics at once.

Seed colour
Yellow=Y
Green=y

Seed shape
Round=R
Wrinkled=r

By crossing YYRR with yyrr he got all yellow round seeds but when he bread these offspring he saw
9/16=YR
3/16=Yr
3/16=yR
1/16=yr

these are the ratios attributed to mendel. the easiest way to show them is with a punnet square.
