Post by hurly » Sun Jan 29, 2006 7:15 pm

People say nuts are healthy. What kind of types do they mean? Is almond good for you?

You mean "nuts" as "peanuts", right? Because I know the other meaning of "nuts" from my gangster guys

All nuts are healthy because they are seeds that contain a lot of nutrients, but they will turn into 'bad things' when you consume them too much ;)

Guess why? :)

Are nuts seeds or fruits?

Peanuts are not nuts. They are beans.

Real nuts are not found in a pod but in the stone of a fruit. These include almonds, hazelnuts, walnuts, etc.

Cashews are a strange one because they grow on the outside of the fruit.

It is true that nuts are classified as a type of dry fruit that do not open, but the term nut is also used by people for things like this: http://users.bestweb.net/~jeff/nut%202.jpg (ignore the writing, it's the first one i came across with google image search)
They are good because they contain a lot of HDL cholesterol, lecitine, vitamins(especially liposoluble) etc

Anyone read "The universe in a nut shell" by Stephen Hawking? Great book for understanding the world around you, and pretty easy to understand

Yeah, his books are generally for people who already have a good grasp of classical+general relatitivity+even cuantic physics. But his last book is easier to understand(I did not say easy, i said easier)

Actually nuts are high in poliunsaturated fatty acids(they also contain the very advertised Omega3) which help reduce the chances of skin irritations and cancer, among other things.
So, in reality, at least according to what i know, nuts help to keep you safe from acnea

Nuts are not much harm full if you eat them by removing its cover & warming those for some time.
Removing nut soft cover is generally recommanded
as it have carcinogens in it.
