Function of the....

Post by opuntia » Wed Jan 18, 2006 9:43 am

Today, as i was going through a book called " All about science", and in the chapter about " Tongue " it says that the taste buds are composed of a number of thin, long cells with a tiny hair  at the end.
And i was wondering about the function of that teeny tiny hair.

Looking forward for a way of satisfying my curiosity,
Thanks,
opuntia

Those thin, long cells are taste (bud) cells, and those tiny hairs on the apex of receptor cells are commonly called as microvilli. These microvilli bear taste receptors. These receptors are transmembrane proteins which bind to the molecules and ions that give rise to the five taste sensations.

Well do you get enough? Or need more things to satisfy you better? Take this! :)
