I need an experiment

Post by Kyle » Mon Jan 16, 2006 2:27 pm

Does anybody know an experiment that proves photosynthesis, or respiration in plants with not a lot of equitment? Also, does anyone know how to tell whether something is oxygen or not without any equitment?

Telling O2 without equipment? How? At least you will need a match.

Most people use water plants as you can see bubbles, and you should read the forum rules regarding topic titles.

You can use the plant called Elodea canadensis. it is the standard plant for this experiment. When i did it i use Miriophilum sp.

I did that two weeks ago in a lab, :) although you will need a flask with water in it for tenmprature control, then you will need some plant like Elodea attached to a glass rod right in a test tube (I think the test tube might have some other liquid.) then you whould have the elodea submerged in the liquid withing the test tube, you should have the test tube submerged within flask wich should have h2o in it. then when you have the whole experiment put together. Then, put your experiment under a 30-watt lamp and record how many bubbles come up to the surface(not the little constant tiny ones) each minute. then do the same thing under a 150-watt light bu;b. you should be able to see a difference in the amount of bubbles, and therefor, the experiment should be successful. sorry if this is so long ;)

Ingenhousz's photosynthesis experiment. That's the basic one. You can modify it by adding carbondioxide, use filter, change plants etc. :)

Yes you can see bubbles, but who knows for sure that it is O2? Do you have any proof? Just a gas is rising. ;)

Did he mention an experiment to prove oxygen is produced during photosynthesis? :? :P

I was talking about his/her second question together with the first.

Good question Ozge. very simple: wait for a high amount of gas has accumulated, then put a match there. you can even put out the match, it will catch fire again in the oxygen

That was what I suggested on my first post. But at least you will need a match. I don't think it is possible without ANY equipment.
