At what point in his experiment did Mendel derive the 1:2:1 ratio? What characteristics in pea plants does this ratio represent?

In true breeding between a purple pea plant and white pea plant. The phenotypic ratio resulted in 3 purple and 1 white 3:1. In terms of genotype there were two categories of purple flowered plants. PP and Pp which gives the 1:2:1 genotypic ratio.
