Well,
"mon ami" is your friend, but is also frequently used in France to refer to your partner, in which case Astus translation would not be too bad. Also The latter meaning is usually used with adapted context to make sure that there is no confusion.
I would rather translate "my love" by "mon amour", and "my dear" by "mon cher", with the same double meaning than in english (as in "my Dear Mr alex I write to you to notify your loss in the last person to reply win" and "my dear wife,...")
